The Mental Health of DJs

So it’s been 3 weeks since I lasted posted, and I think I’ve finally come to a decision on both my discipline and subject matter for the MMP.

Starting with the subject, I thought about some of the big dance music stories that had occurred over the past year. The one stand out story that kept coming to mind was the death of Swedish DJ, Avicii, who at the age of 28 was believed to have taken his own life. According to sources, it was believed the pressure of the music industry was one of the contributing factors to his death, along with some health complications in the past which greatly impacted his mental health.

So from this, I researched into what was being done for the mental health of DJs as a result of his death and I came across some pretty shocking statistics. A study conducted in 2016 by a charity called Help Musicians UK proved that musicians are 3x more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety compared to the general public. I tried researching further to look into what some of these factors were that were causing these issues for musicians’ mental health, and there was hardly anything about it. When I went to look into this, but for DJs, there was literally nothing.

So after deciding my subject matter, it then came down to my discipline. Now because the subject is such a sensitive one, it would be very difficult to find musicians who will happily open up on camera about their mental health. Not only this, some may want to remain anonymous and this would be very difficult to film. It’s also difficult to make the subject of mental health visually pleasing, so I’ve decided that a written feature would be best suitable.

Ahead of my group meeting with my MMP tutor on Tuesday, I’m going to pitch this idea and hopefully I’ll receive some feedback from both her and my peers about my idea and they’ll be able to give me some ideas about where I can take my idea next.
