Since the meeting with my tutor and some of my peers, I’ve decided to definitely go ahead with looking into DJs and their mental health. As a group, we discussed about what publication would be best suited for my subject matter. I suggested the publication Mixmag – a dance music and club culture magazine but from feedback, we thought this might not be appropriate as majority of their content is light-hearted and entertaining whereas my subject matter is much more serious. I was told to look at the Sunday supplements as something like this might fit in well with their content matter.
I’ve also had a think about what angles to take on the print feature, the online feature as well as the video and audio content. For the print feature, I will be investigating these exact factors that are causing mental health issues for DJs, speaking to a DJ who has struggled in the past, as well as a psychotherapist who can explain why. I’d also like to speak to someone from the charity Help Musicians UK who can maybe expand a bit more on the study they conducted.
For the online feature, I thought about looking into the Kaleidoscope Orchestra (they bridge the gap between dance music and classical music). I saw this orchestra back in the summer at Creamfields festival, where they paid tribute to Avicii. I had a look back on Facebook at their performance and noticed that the Musical Director, Steve Pycroft, had posted a video about why he decided to do the performance.
After watching the video, I thought Steve would be an interesting perspective in my feature.
If I then did choose this angle, I could perhaps use some of my footage from Creamfields in the video content. I haven’t had any ideas about the audio content yet but hopefully this will come as I get further with the project.
