Mixmag Week 2 and New Interviewee...

After completing two weeks at Mixmag, it’s safe to say it’s been a very busy few weeks. As well as writing news content for their website, I also researched up and coming artists which will go in the December issue of the magazine. I also wrote scripts for some Mixmag info vids, which go up on their social feeds. All of this experience has given me so much guidance on how to lead my own project and make it as suitable as I can for Mixmag and its audience.

I also managed to find a case study for the print feature to replace Emika. I got in contact with Helen Brice and she put me in contact with Adrian Lee, someone involved in the music industry. He then got in touch with Brandon Block, a real big name DJ back in the 80s/90s. Brandon has publicly gone through the mill, dealing with his drug and alcohol addictions as well as causing a stir when he stormed the stage at The Brits back in 2000. He spoke about his own ordeal with his mental health as well as the current state of the industry and what more needs to be done to help DJs.

In preparation for next week, I plan on speaking to Sally-Anne Gross, the academic that wrote the study ‘Can Music Make You Sick?’ which suggests musicians are three times more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression compared to the general public. I’m hoping she can give me a bit more insight into the study as well as her own opinion on mental health in the music industry.
